Though the DPU did approve it, Berkshire Gas has dropped this expansion plan and elected to leave the moratorium on new customers in place, citing concerns about fiscal feasibility. During the moratorium, residents and businesses have largely found alternate means of coping without gas expansion, either by conserving more through efficiency, or seeking alternative energy sources. Berkshire Gas has since launched a million dollar “alternative heating grants” program, due to a settlement with the Massachusetts Attorney General.
