TUESDAY — JUNE 13, 2017 — BOSTON, MA
—  Campaign for a Clean Energy Future (MCAN) Lobby Day at the Statehouse. This is a big opportunity to push carbon pricing in Massachusetts.  We will be looking to identify new supporters in the legislature and mobilize our current supporters to take action in advance of our eventual hearing date.  One of the best ways to discourage behavior we don’t want is to put a price on it, and studies have shown that pricing carbon would cut our carbon pollution by up to 10%. This legislation would establish a common-sense fee-and-rebate system of carbon pollution fees charged to fossil fuel importers.  The proposals before the legislature would combat climate change, promote green infrastructure, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create jobs.

SATURDAY — JANUARY 28, 2016 — NORTHAMPTON, MA

Forum: Climate Action in a Time of Crisis. Featured will be representatives from the Massachusetts legislature, climate scientists and activists to discuss the problem and an action plan that will protect our earth from climate destruction. The forum will be one step in forming our segment of the massive movement that will be necessary to protect our earth and the generations to come.
For those of us who are working to fight climate change, if the cabinet choices are any indication of its direction, the effect of the new administration could be catastrophic. We are on the verge of a meteorologic crisis, with elevated temperatures provoking “tipping points” in further emissions and warming that can no longer be stopped by human intervention.
Failure to address the climate crisis is creating a political crisis. It will take a smart and thoughtful movement of ALL of us, using every tool available, to accomplish the necessary economic and structural changes our country needs.

TUESDAY — FEBRUARY 28, 2017 — SANDISFIELD, MA
Kinder Morgan at Sandisfield Conservation Commission Meeting. There are still outstanding issues with the Order of Conditions with the Conservation Commission. A representative for Kinder Morgan will be attending the next Sandisfield Conservation Commission meeting as they are on the agenda to discuss the CT Expansion pipeline project. KM has renewed its request to FERC for a Limited Notice to Proceed with tree felling in Sandisfield/Otis State Forest as they appear to be anxious to complete tree felling before March 31st, during the “environmentally preferred window” related to migratory birds. In their most recent Biweekly Status Report, they again claimed to have “received all federal permits needed for tree felling.” That’s not quite true. Your presence at the meeting this month will let the company know that the people of Massachusetts will not just step aside for this pipeline. Public comments are not allowed. There is no need to speak, though. It is people showing up to listen and witness that is really needed.

TUESDAY — FEBRUARY 28, 2017 — W. ROXBURY, MA
Safety Information Meeting on the West Roxbury Lateral Pipeline (WRL). West Roxbury Saves Energy (WRSE) is holding a SAFETY INFORMATION MEETING with the Community Liaison Representative from the Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Now that the pipeline is operational (since January, though the City’s legal appeal in D.C. is still pending), PHMSA has oversight of regulations pipeline operators like Spectra and National Grid must follow, including plans that would involve our “first responders,” as our Police and Fire Commissioners have requested.

To the best of our knowledge, Spectra and/or National Grid have failed to comply with many of these regulations–including, prior to the commencement of pipeline operations–the preparation of emergency plans. This meeting is therefore an opportunity to bring these concerns to the attention of the PHMSA representative in person and learn what enforcement actions PHMSA can and will take.

APRIL 10-21 — US SENATE DISTRICT OFFICES
Meet US Senators or Staff About FERC Vacancies. The Senate Goes On Recess from April 10 to April 21. Plan a meeting with your Senators in their district offices to say:
• FERC approved pipelines are damaging communities and devastating the climate.
• FERC is so biased that its approval of pipelines is a foregone conclusion.
• FERC is abusing communities — stripping them of their legal rights and undermining the authority of state protections.
• Be a champion to demand that Congress take steps to dissolve FERC and replace it with an agency that is dedicated to a just transition off fossil fuels.
• Vote NO on Trump’s nominations to FERC until steps are taken to replace FERC.

AWAKE, A Dream From Standing Rock – Film Screening and Dinner. Come see the brand-new film documentary chronicling the events at Standing Rock by Josh Fox, James Spione, and Myron Dewey. Donations welcome to support the Indigenous Media Fund and Pipeline Fighters Fund, created by the filmmakers and Indigenous leaders. AWAKE follows the dramatic rise of the historic #NODAPL native-led peaceful resistance at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation near Cannon Ball, North Dakota, which captured the world’s attention as one of the biggest stories of 2016. Each of the three sections of the film tells the story of the Standing Rock protests in the unique perspective and style of the filmmaker who created it.
Executive produced by Doug Good Feather, Emmy Award winning filmmaker Amy Ziering (The Invisible War, The Hunting Grounds) and Lauren Taschen, the film’s score features music from indigenous musician/activists Nahko, (Nahko and Medicine for the People) and Prolific the Rapper. Floris White Bull and Doug Good Feather serve as advisors, White Bull is also one of the film’s writers.
This is the first of a three-part Water Protectors Film and Speaker Series co-sponsored by the Wendell Energy Committee and North Quabbin Energy. For more information: 978-544-3686. » Facebook event page for more information

Due to the lack of local testing by Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), we took it upon ourselves to measure the current levels of pollution, such as benzene and formaldehyde, in the Fore River Basin. We worked with a local testing laboratory to gather data in and around the the proposed compressor site.  FRRACS and the North Weymouth Civic Association also purchased formaldehyde testing badges that were analyzed by a certified testing laboratory.
The data that we have collected conflicts with both MassDEP’s and Spectra’s data. Dr. Curt Nordgaard, who has been leading the testing for the past year, will be presenting the data. At the meeting, we will explain the testing, how it relates to the station, and what the results mean. We have invited local elected officials, as well as representatives from MassDEP, in the hopes that they will engage in an open dialogue about our concerns related to public health in our communities.

Heating, hot water and air conditioning account for approximately 70% of the energy used in homes and combines to be the largest source of CO2 emissions for most households. Buildings account for over 1/3 of the greenhouse gas emissions statewide – only transportation makes a larger contribution.
The session will provide some background on the need to convert to renewable heating, how air-source and ground-source heat pumps work, their efficiencies, energy & $$ savings estimations, and installation costs. John will discuss NYSERDA’s Renewable Heating & Cooling Program including a $15 million rebate program approved by Governor Cuomo earlier this year.
